North Carolina is a beautiful state; many drivers pass through it daily and receive speeding tickets. Many of these drivers are unaware of the consequences of receiving a ticket on their home state driver’s license. Many drivers will ignore the ticket or pay the fine, which will likely drastically affect their driver’s license.
Suppose an out-of-state driver fails to comply with A SPEEDING ticket. In that case, the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles will notify your home state, revoking your privilege to drive in your home state and North Carolina.
North Carolina is a member of the Driver’s License Compact, along with 44 other states and the District of Columbia. See N.C. Gen. Stat. 20-4.21. This compact is an agreement among states to report motor vehicle convictions to one another when a driver licensed in one member state is convicted in another member state. The purpose of the compact is to promote compliance with motor vehicle laws in member states and to make overall compliance with motor vehicle laws a condition precedent to obtaining or maintaining a license in a member state.
An out-of-State driver should not ignore or pay off a North Carolina traffic ticket without contacting McPhail Law, PLLC. North Carolina has some of the strictest traffic laws regarding speeding and driving while impaired. For example, if you travel in a 55-mile-per-hour zone and get a speeding ticket for driving more than 15 miles per hour over the speed limit, this will trigger a 30-day suspension, even if it’s your first offense. McPhail Law, PLLC can represent you in most cases without you appearing in court and likely keeping your driver’s license clean and preventing a revocation.
